To ensure the safety of ALL children, violent behaviors will not be tolerated! We will work with students to develop self control, however, any student who, after being advised of unacceptable behavior, continues to participate in willfull acts of violence while in our care, will be disenrolled from our program without refund or exception. PURPOSE: To help the child develop self-control and a sense of responsibility for their own actions. NEED: The program is too short to allow a child to distract and disturb the other children; Physical or verbal harming, bullying, teasing, or intimidating others are considered reasons for discipline; when the “Hillrise Bill of Rights& Responsibilities” and the “Character Counts Pillars” are violated. Step 1 Warning: Anticipate problems, listen without judgment, calmly redirect the child’s attention while keeping the child involved in the activity…this gives the child an opportunity to correct his/her behavior. If a victim is involved, encourage the child to vent the way they feel too; if they don’t confide in you, give them permission to seek out another trusted adult. Settle arguments with calm words and suggest appropriate behavior in this situation. Clearly tell the student what the consequences will be if the behavior continues (read time-out and suspension). Step 2 Time-out: If the offense is more serious or if the negative behavior is repeated, the child will be put in time-out with the hall monitor. In the former case, listen to the offender and the victim (if there is one), discuss alternative positive reactions to the situation including “The Bill” and “Character”, then call the guardian/parent to report the incident. After 5 minutes, the monitor will calmly listen to the child, discuss the appropriate behavior to the child and let the child know that when he/she is ready to listen and act appropriately, he/she may return. Step 3 Suspension: The hall monitor will call the guardian/parent and suspension for two classes is given. If the child returns and has not made a good faith effort to improve behavior the next offensive will result in dismissal from the program. STUDENTS BILL OF RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES In order to promote a safe and effective learning environment, WE ALL have the following rights and responsibilities: 1.
